PROBE

From the comfort of your throne room, send your lieutenants out to check out
an area to see the size and number of inhabitants - all without lifting more
than a finger (or 10 depending how you type).  There are limits of course,
the report will be a little inexact but after a few expeditions, you can figure
it out.  You have to fund the expeditions but it's a relatively small expenditure
for a wealthy ruler such as yourself.  The cost to fund and the success rate
varies based on the level of the area being explored but it works most of the
time and you get reasonably accurate information.

Usage: probe <area name>
